Our History
We have 3 convenient locations, Hurstville, Hornsby and Newtown. Our Hurstville practice was established in approximately 1975 by Dr. Graeme O’Neil, originally located at 34 MacMahon Street. The practice was then taken over by Dr. Bill Choo in 1980. Dr. Kon joined Dr. Choo in 1998 and eventually took over the practice following Dr. Choo’s retirement. We relocated in January 2004 to our current residence at Suite 22, 33 MacMahon Street.
Over the years, we have expanded our practice to accommodate our patients’ needs. As such, we now have three orthodontists (Dr. Daniel Tan, Dr. Khac “Teddy” Nguyen and Dr. Jessica Yeo) working with Dr. Luke Kon to assist in providing flexibility along with exceptional care to our patients.
In our surgery, each orthodontist cares for their specific patients. Orthodontic treatment will be carried out by this Orthodontist and certain procedures by our specially trained Hygienists. All treatment is under the supervision of the Orthodontist and is held to the highest standard of excellence. Periodically, should you require an appointment outside of your Orthodontist’s scheduled clinical hours, one of our other Orthodontists would be happy to provide assistance.
ALL ABOUT ORTHO
PATIENT GUIDE
Foods to avoid:
Chewy foods: bagels, hard rolls, liquorice
Crunchy foods: popcorn, ice, chips
Sticky foods: caramels, gum
Hard foods: nuts, lollies
Chewing on hard things (for example, pens, pencils, or fingernails) can damage the braces. Damaged braces will cause treatment to take longer.
You can still eat foods you have to bite into (i.e. corn on the cob, apples, carrots), just be sure to cut them up first.
Brushing/Flossing:
It’s more important than ever to brush and floss regularly when you have braces, so the teeth and gums are healthy after orthodontic treatment. Patients who do not keep their teeth clean may require more frequent visits to the dentist for a professional cleaning. Adults who have a history of gum disease should also see a periodontist during orthodontic treatment.
Wearing elastics:
Throughout treatment, you may be asked to wear elastic bands. The success of these elastics is entirely up to you. Be sure to wear them in the prescribed manner at all times.
General soreness:
When you get your braces on, you may feel general soreness in your mouth and teeth may be tender to biting pressures for three to five days. If the tenderness is severe, you may wish to take over the counter pain relief. The lips, cheeks, and tongue may also become irritated for one to two weeks as they adapt to the braces. This can be relieved by rinsing your mouth with a warm salt water. You can also place wax on localized areas of braces to lessen irritation during this adjustment period. We’ll show you how!
Frequency of appointments:
Typically orthodontic appointments are scheduled in 6-8 week intervals. For this reason, it is important to make your next appointment before you leave our office!
